Waiting: A Contemplative Walk Reflecting on Acts 1-2
Audio Guided Walk by Bette Dickinson
Last Friday, we began stepping into the story of waiting—sitting with the disciples in that tender space between what has been and what is yet to come. Jesus simply tells them: wait. Wait for the promise. Wait for the Spirit. Wait for the power that will reshape their lives and the world.
This week, we continue that journey together.
In today’s reflection, we turn to Acts 1-2 and imagine ourselves alongside those first followers, naming our longings, opening our hands, and preparing our hearts to receive the life God is forming in us—even when it feels unseen.
“After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. ... ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised... For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’”
—Acts 1:3-5 (NIV)
Waiting is never easy. What are you waiting on God for right now? Wisdom? Clarity? Resources? Opportunities?
Take a moment to name it in your heart. What is the gift you long to receive?
As Willie Jennings beautifully reminds us,
“From this moment forward every common thing of the disciples of Jesus ... exists in the posture of waiting and stands in the shadow cast by the Holy Spirit and within the necessary work of prayer.”
